. Persepolis was instrumental to the Persian Empire as the capital city and was designed to be the showcase center for receptions and festivals. Persepolis was chosen a a UNESCO site due its fulfillment of three criteria as follows:
i. To represent a masterpiece of human creative genius.

Geographical Info
Located In present day Southwest Iran, Persepolis is found at the foot of Kuh-e Rahmat (Mountain of Mercy). It was the former capital of the Great Persian Empire.

Founders
Construction began under the rule of King Darius in 518BCE, but expansion and development of Persepolis continued reached peaks under the rules of Xerxes I and Artaxerxes III.

Site Today
Principal Threats: The ruins of Persepolis are threatened by the growth of nearby towns (Ex Marvdasht) and villages as well as the arrival of new polluting industries.
Renovations: All restoration efforts made to Persepolis respects the monuments authenticity. There has been no modern renovations and the location of the original buildings and structures haven't changed. In addition restoration is done using traditional materials. |
